Indian classical dance has a long history rooted in India’s cultural and artistic traditions. One of its earliest and most important texts is the Natya Shastra, attributed to Bharata Muni and generally dated between 200 BCE and 200 CE. The text presents detailed principles covering movement, facial expression, hand gestures, music, drama and stage presentation.
Over centuries, these traditions developed across different regions of India, giving rise to distinct classical forms, each with its own vocabulary, technique, music and cultural context. Among these are Kathak, associated with North India, and Bharatanatyam, associated with South India.
Both forms bring together movement, expression, music and storytelling while requiring years of disciplined training. Their continued practice depends upon teachers passing knowledge and technique to successive generations of students.
Honouring Classical Dance Since
Three Decades
The story of Kalanand Nritya Sanstha began in 1992, inspired by the work and teaching of Pandit Birju Maharaj and carried forward through the dedication of Guru Bhavana Lele.
After learning under her Guru, Guru Bhavana Lele began teaching with just two students. What started as a small class gradually grew into an institution that has introduced thousands of students to classical dance over the years.
Her teaching has also become a family legacy. Among the students she has taught is her own daughter, who represents another generation connected with the art and its traditions.
Today, Kalanand Nritya Sanstha continues to teach and promote Kathak and Bharatanatyam, giving students the opportunity to learn their techniques, compositions, expressions and cultural context through structured training.
The Sanstha’s work is centred on a simple idea: classical dance survives when it is taught, practised and passed on to the next generation.
